X-Original-Date: Thu, 06 Mar 2003 00:01:21 -0500 From: Riiya@aol.com Subject: [KOR][FanFic] Fugawari Orange Street Episode 9 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ FUGAWARI ORANGE STREET A KOR universe fanfic By FOS Project Web page-http://members.aol.com/Riiya/fos.html Discussion group-http://groups.yahoo.com/groups/ FugawariOrangeStreet/ FTP archive-ftp://ftp.cs.ubc.ca/pub/archive/anime-fan-works/KOR/ Fugawari-Orange-Street/ Introduction: Fugawari Orange Street is a new fanfic series set in the world of Kimagure Orange Road. Its origin was a simple message on the KOR mailing list, which somehow evolved into a discussion of what might have happened to the original characters. Specific comments about Kazuya, and the mention that he is probably around the age Kyousuke was during KOR, led to the proposal of creating a fanfic to follow him as he travels through Kouryou High School. FOS is set in the manga universe, and attempts to follow its specific details and timeline as closely as possible. However, details on characters other than KOR's Big Three are sketchy, and ten years have passed since we last saw these characters. If you disagree with the liberties we've taken, send us comments. Send all comments to riiya@aol.com. FOS was originally to be released biweekly, in real time. However, the real world has impeded these lofty plans. In any case, we will continue to set stories approximately two weeks apart, and we hope you'll read this episode and all that eventually follow. As is the case with many fanfic series, |Word| represents English dialog. Fugawari Orange Street is based on the characters and situations of Kimagure Orange Road, created by and copyright of Izumi Matsumoto; new characters and situations created by and copyright of Tony Chen, Greg Dreher, Daniel Lee, Paolo Valladolid, and Jeoff Wilks. Episode text copyright of Greg Dreher. Any use of copyrighted or trademarked material is not and should not be construed as a challenge to these statuses. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Episode 9 "Love, Honor, and Jujutsu" Kazuya and Maiko faced each other in Kazuya's back yard. Both wore padded headgear, chestguards, and gloves. Underneath the protective gear, they were casually dressed in shorts and t-shirts. Kazuya: Ahahahah... you've beaten me twice already, Mai-chan.... Let's stop sparring now, okay? Maiko: [frowns] You know how mad Sensei will be if he finds out you haven't been practicing again! This is why I'm 4-Kyu* and you're still 5-Kyu* even though we started training at the same time! Let's go, Kazu-kun! *Belt ranking used in Judo, Aikido, and some Jujutsu systems with 5-Kyu being lowest and 1-Kyu being highest and just below 1-Dan (1st-degree black belt). She suddenly attacked, unleashing a flurry of kicks and hand strikes. Kazuya barely managed to block or dodge some of them, but got hit on the head and chest areas. Kazuya: {Kuso!* This is what I get for relying too much on the Power and not practicing enough!} *Swear word Distracted by Maiko's strikes and kicks, Kazuya was caught by surprise as she suddenly grabbed his arm and threw him. He landed on the practice mat, completely breaking his fall with a roll. He sat and faced Maiko with a display of mock annoyance on his face. Maiko: [laughs] At least you still remember how to breakfall properly. Kazuya: Che,* I sure didn't see that one coming! *A mild oath Maiko: You would have if you had been practicing more consistently! Kazuya: Easy for you to say, Ms. 4-Kyu! I have to work part-time, you know, in addition to school! Maiko: [waves dismissively] Excuses, excuses... Madoka-neechan also worked part-time - at the very same place you work now, for crying out loud - AND did well in school AND managed to develop her martial skills! Kazuya: Yeah... yeah... AND she also learned how to play piano and just about every musical instrument ever invented. But I have my own special skills! Maiko: [beckons] Why don't you get up and show me, then? [smiles softly] Stop holding back just because I'm a girl... [now in mock anger] If I catch you doing it again, I'll REALLY put the hurt on you! Kazuya: [in mock anger] Hmph! I won't hold back on you now! He got up and went on the offensive. He had practiced basic strikes and kicks often enough, however infrequently, that he was able to deliver them competently. Unfortunately, as before, he was no match for Maiko, who easily deflected and evaded his attacks. "She's toying with me," Kazuya thought as he noted that Maiko was not counterattacking. She suddenly tripped him with a well-timed foot sweep. As he fell, she attempted to pin him to the ground. He managed to escape her hold. After a few more minutes of struggling for leverage, Maiko laid on her back with Kazuya trapped between her legs. Kazuya knew that although he was on top, Maiko was still in control. If he slipped here, he was easily vulnerable to a sudden shoulder crank, choke, or armbar. Kazuya: {I think I remember how to get out of this one.... Let's see... I think I do this....} He put an elbow on Maiko's thigh as he began his escape attempt. Maiko recognized the technique he was attempting and countered it by grabbing his triceps with one hand while simultaneously pushing off the ground with the other and raising her hips. Suddenly, Kazuya lay flat on his back with Maiko straddling him. Maiko lowered her head near Kazuya's, making it harder for him to push her off while seizing one of his arms for a shoulder crank. Neither of them noticed the sound of the door leading to the backyard opening. Kyouko: Hi guys, I- Maiko and Kyouko turned at the sound of Kyouko's voice. For a moment that seemed to last an eternity, Kazuya and Maiko simply returned Kyouko's stare as her eyes widened in apparent shock. Kyouko turned and ran away from the door as her face turned bright red. Kyouko: {I must have caught them at an intimate moment!} Maiko: Kyou-chan! Kazuya: Itee!!!* *Ouch!!! A distracted Maiko had cranked Kazuya's shoulder a little too far. Tera rushed out through the open door and sat not too far from Kazuya's head. Kazuya could have sworn he saw the fat old cat grinning at him in satisfaction. Later that afternoon at ABCB, an embarrassed Kyouko sat with her friends. Kyouko: I feel so silly. I don't know much about martial arts so.... Kazuya: [smiling] It's understandable. We're still kind of shy about jujutsu sparring in front of any audience outside of the dojo... ha ha ha... [tries to raise arm to place hand behind head]... Itee!! Maiko: Careful with that shoulder, Kazu-kun! Kyouko: [alarmed] Are you okay, Kazu-kun? What happened? Maiko: I accidentally... Kazuya: It's okay! My shoulder is just a little sore from today's practice. Kyouko: Still... it's kind of cool you guys practice martial arts. I never would have thought.... Maiko: Well, we both loved Ranma 1/2 when we were kids. Kyouko: [laughs] Me too! Kazuya: And Jackie Chan movies! But, really, it was my cousin Kurumi-neechan.... * * * Flashback to March, 1995. Kazuya and Maiko walked down a sidewalk, following Kasuga Kurumi. At 23 years of age, Kurumi's eyes and gait still radiated much of the exuberance of her childhood years. While she had no problem attracting admirers with her athletic good looks, many of these same admirers were invariably put off by a straightforwardness not exhibited by the stereotypical ideal Japanese woman. Kurumi: I'm sorry I'm more than two months late in giving you a birthday present. Kazuya: You keep telling me that this place we're going to will have my present. What's the relationship here, Oneechan?* *Literally "big sister," but can also mean older cousin or friend. Kurumi: All in good time, Kazuya. Soon they entered a small dojo with a group of six young students, varying in age from about five to the teens, practicing tumbling. The sensei who was watching them had tanned skin and reddish-brown hair. He did a double take when he saw Kazuya, and frowned slightly. However, he smiled when his eyes fell on Kurumi. He turned to the students. Sensei: Practice the kata I taught you last class. I'll check on you later. Students: Hai!* *Yes! (polite) Sensei: [turning to Kurumi] Kurumi-chan! What a surprise! Kurumi: [smiles] Konnichi wa,* Yuusaku! *Good afternoon Kazuya: {Yuusaku... Hino Yuusaku?!?} Indeed, this was the Yuusaku that Kazuya had known long ago. Despite his youthful appearance, the experience gained from many years of dedicated martial training was evident in his movements and his penetrating gaze. Yuusaku: Will you be in town long? Kurumi: Just a few more days. [indicating Kazuya and Maiko] These are the new students I was telling you about: Kasuga Kazuya and Asagiri Maiko. Yuusaku: [turns to Kazuya] Sumimasen.* For a moment, I thought you were another Kasuga I used to... know. Of course, he's much older than you, so you can't be him, right? You've certainly grown! *Sorry about that. Kazuya: Is that a fact? [scratches the back of his head] Ha ha ha.... Kazuya recalled shoving a terrified Yuusaku and Kyousuke, both clad in ski gear, down a slope long ago. He also recalled screwing up a prank on which he and Yuusaku had collaborated, which was supposeed to get Kyousuke in trouble and set up Yuusaku to be the hero in Hikaru's heart at Kyousuke's painful expense. "I hope he doesn't remember those things," Kazuya thought to himself nervously. "Especially that one time...." He shivered as he recalled everyone walking in on him in the nude. He turned to Kurumi. Kazuya: Say, Oneechan, what did you mean by "students?" Kurumi: This is your birthday present from me, Kazuya! With Yuusaku's cooperation, I arranged for three months of jujutsu training at no charge to you. Maiko: Wow, what a cool present, Kazu-kun! Kurumi: Since you're his best friend, Maiko-chan, I included you in the deal too. Maiko: Arigatou gozaimasu,* Oneechan! *Thank you (polite) Kazuya: Arigatou, Oneechan... it's just that this is a surprise. Kurumi: Remember how Oniichan* got into trouble a lot [leans close and whispers] and was forced to use the Power to defend himself? *Elder brother Kazuya: Hai.... Kurumi: I feel it's better for you to have an alternative to resorting to it. I'd teach you myself, but living in another city prevents me from doing just that. So, I bring you to Yuusaku, who despite his young age holds a 2-dan in karate and a 4-dan in jujutsu, and has proven himself to be an excellent martial artist. His Sensei allowed him to open his own dojo for teaching jujutsu to young people. You can thank me by training hard. Yuusaku: Thank you for bringing these students to me. I'll see to it that they are trained well. [Looks meaningfully at Kazuya] Kazuya: {*GULP*} * * * Back to the present time at the Abcb.... Kyouko: You met your sensei before your cousin introduced you, Kazu-kun? Kazuya: When I was little, I remembered him as the guy who hated my cousin Kyousuke-niichan because a girl he really liked was in love with Oniichan. Oniichan was terrified of him because of his 2-dan in karate. Kyouko: Did they fight? Terrible, I know... [smiles dreamily] ...but kind of romantic too. Kazuya: That girl, Hikaru-neechan, wouldn't let Hino-sensei touch Oniichan. Maiko: If Sensei was already a karate expert, I wonder why he took up jujutsu. Kazuya: Well, not long after you moved away, Kyouko-san, Mai-chan and I were at my cousins' place.... * * * A younger Yuusaku lounged in the living room of the Kasuga residence at Green Castle Apartments, watching Kurumi's favorite American TV program, WWF Wrestling, with the Kasuga twins, Hikaru, and a much younger Kazuya and Maiko. The absence of Kasuga Kyousuke, the twins' elder brother who had departed almost two years before for college, hadn't made the apartment any quieter. Now in her senior year of high school, Hikaru had changed the most in appearance, having started to grow her hair longer. Yuusaku: Aww... that wrestling stuff can't be real. *I* could easily take out any of those wrestlers. Suddenly, Kurumi tackled Yuusaku, quickly applying a strategic armlock that rendered him helpless. Kurumi: How about this? Does this feel real enough?!? Try taking *me* out! Yuusaku: Why, you... have you forgotten I'm a 2-dan? I'll show you what's... Itee!!! Kurumi intensified her armlock as the two younger kids glanced at each other excitedly. Kazuya and Maiko: A fight! A fight! Kurumi: Your 2-dan won't do you any good when you're trapped in a good submission hold! Manami: Kurumi! Kazuya: [to Maiko] Mai-chan, I'll bet you Kurumi-neechan will challenge him next. Maiko: I'll bet you she won't! Next treat will be on the loser! Kazuya: You're on! Manami: Kazuya, shame on you! Kurumi, that's enough! Kurumi released Yuusaku, who rolled away and sat up, glaring at her. Yuusaku: You just got lucky on me... taking me by surprise like that. Kurumi: You think you can beat me just because you know karate? I'll show you how wrong you are... in front of the whole school! Manami: Kurumi! Yuusaku: What... are you challenging me? Hikaru: Yuusaku, I think this has gone far enough! Kurumi: I do challenge you! Yuusaku: [to Hikaru] See? She's challenging me! I can't back down now! Kurumi: Meet me at the judo club tomorrow afternoon... if you dare! Kazuya: Oniichan,* you should swallow your pride. Being called a coward would be much better for you than what Kurumi-neechan is going to do to you! *Here, a title of respect for a slightly older person, Yuusaku in this case Manami: Kazuya! Hikaru: Hino Yuusaku, if you accept Kurumi's challenge, I won't let you date me anymore! You've been a good friend all these years but Kurumi is my friend too! I won't have you bully a woman! Yuusaku: I accept! Hikaru: Grr.... Fine then! I'm leaving! Before she stepped out the door, Hikaru stopped and turned around, smiling at the twins. Hikaru: Jaa ne,* Kurumi-chan! Jaa, Manami-chan! *See ya She turned to Yuusaku. He flinched slightly from her beautiful, yet terrifying, "Angel of Death" gaze. Hikaru: Sayonara,* Yuusaku. *Farewell Yuusaku: Hikaru-chan! Wait! She slammed the door behind her in reply. Yuusaku glared at Kurumi as Manami sweated. Yuusaku: You'll be sorry for this! Manami: Yuusaku, please excuse my sis- Without a word, Yuusaku walked out the front foor as Kazuya turned to Maiko with a smug grin. Kazuya: You owe me a treat! COMMERCIAL BREAK Nine-year-old Madoka and fifteen-year-old Kyousuke are sitting under a tree. The hazy edges of the scene indicate that this is a flashback. Madoka: Let's meet back here in 6 years! Kyousuke: Okay.... The scene fades, and only Kyousuke is under the tree. He is waiting, impatiently and nervously. The view switches to a cab in downtown Tokyo, stalled in especially bad rush hour traffic. Madoka is the passenger. Madoka: Can't you go? I have a really important meeting to get to! Driver: Sorry, ma'am. Traffic is totally stopped. Announcer: Still need cellular? Get it from the company that's better all around! 360 Degrees Communications. Writer's Note: Standard Disclaimer END COMMERCIAL BREAK Word of the upcoming bout between Hino Yuusaku and Kasuga Kurumi had spread through Kouryou High School like wildfire. Hikaru walked into the classroom to find Kurumi relaxing at her seat and Manami rummaging through her schoolbag. Kurumi: Ohayou,* Hikaru-chan! *Good morning Hikaru: Ohayou, Kurumi-chan, Manami-chan. Kurumi-chan, please call off the fight. Manami: That's what I've been saying since yesterday, but she won't listen to me. Kurumi: No way am I going to back out of this. Besides, it's good publicity for the judo club. Hikaru: But you've only been studying judo for a year! Yuusaku on the other hand.... Kurumi: True, but I've been practicing wrestling techniques long before that, heh heh. She grinned as she recalled herself applying a leg lock to Komatsu, an arm lock to Hatta, and just about every lock and painful hold to her older brother. Kurumi: What I've been learning at the judo club has made me an even better wrestler! Manami: But that's not Hikaru-chan's real point! Yuusaku is her.... Hikaru: [frowning] Not anymore! Hikaru's face softened. Hikaru: Look, Kurumi-chan, you are one of my best friends. I still... care about Yuusaku too. I just don't want to see the two of you fight. Kurumi: Don't worry, we'll both be wearing sparring protection gear! Hikaru threw up her hands as Manami slapped her own forehead and sighed in exasperation. Class began. For the first time in a while, Yuusaku ate lunch alone again. Shinichi spotted him and approached him with a smirk. Shinichi: Eating lunch alone, Hino? I heard Hikaru-chan dumped you because you want to fight a girl. Yuusaku ignored him. Shinichi: A real man wouldn't fight a girl. Maybe that's why Hikaru-chan finally realized her mistake in choosing you over me. Yuusaku: So what are you saying? That you are a real man even though you've never been able to beat me? Besides, you don't know what Kurumi-chan is like. She could probably beat a "real man" such as you. Shinichi's face darkened. Yuusaku: Didn't like that, did you? You can try taking it out on me right now if you like. Yuusaku smiled at Shinichi grimly. Shinichi: [Stalking off] I'll enjoy watching you lose. * * * Late afternoon, the gym was packed with students eager to watch the Hino-Kasuga bout. Yuusaku and Kurumi faced each other in the ring. Both were clad in white gis and sparring gear consisting of chestpads, padded boots, headgear, and light gloves. Kurumi's long hair was neatly tied up into a bun. Hikaru and Manami looked on worriedly. Shinichi spotted Hikaru and sat next to her. Hikaru: {Shinichi tries to be nice to me but he's always been too pushy!} Shinichi: So, you did come to watch your ex-boy- Hikaru: What's it to you? [glares] Shinichi: Heyyy... [laughs nervously] ...I just wanted to let you know I'm still available. Hikaru: I'm sure this pleases your admirers. By the way, you're sitting in his seat. Shinichi: A new boyfriend? Hikaru: [smirking] Yeah, maybe you could say that... "Konban wa, Oneechan!" Shinichi turned to see a young boy carrying a skateboard under each arm waving as he approached him. His facial features were somehow familiar. Hikaru: Konban wa, Kazuya-kun! [to Shinichi] Like I said, you're sitting in his seat! Rejected yet again, Shinichi looked downcast as he stood up and began to look around for another seat. He looked up at the ring where his eyes met those of Yuusaku. The two boys glared at each other for a while. Manami: [to Hikaru] Honestly, he thinks he's God's gift to women! Kazuya: Who, me? Hikaru: A little darling like you? Silly! Hikaru smiled as she patted Kazuya on the head and winked at the cute little short-haired brunette taking a seat next to Kazuya. She had two ice cream cones in her hands. Little girl: Douzo.* [Hands a cone to Kazuya] As we agreed yesterday. *For you/Here you go Kazuya: Arigato! Hikaru: [to Manami] What's her name again? Manami: Oh, you mean Kazuya's girlfriend? Kazuya: Hey! Little girl: [giggles] I'm a girl and I'm his friend! Kazuya: That's not what Oneechan meant, Mai-chan! All three girls giggled as Kazuya turned red. Referee: These are the rules: The karateka gets a point for every good hit on the judoka and 3 points for every knockdown. The judoka gets 3 points for every submission by joint-lock or choke and 2 points for every throw. There will be no eye-gouging or strikes to the throat. The first person to score 7 points wins the match. Begin! Yuusaku immediately lauched a kick at Kurumi and connected solidly, sending her sprawling. Referee: Hino, 3 points! Yuusaku moved closer to Kurumi. He tried to punch but suddenly found his arm grabbed. Before he knew it, he had been thrown and was lying on his back. Referee: Kasuga, 2 points! Yuusaku warily rose to his feet. He tried to kick again, but this time a prepared Kurumi grabbed his leg and easily uprooted him. As he fell onto his back, Kurumi fell on top of him, straddling him. When Yuusaku tried to push off Kurumi, she quickly seized one of his arms and fell back down with his arm trapped in a classic juji-gatame. Judo armlock where the opponent's arm is held between the judoka's legs as the judoka slowly raises her hips, causing the elbow to bend the wrong way Referee: Kasuga, 3 points! Kurumi: {Time for a quick finish!} Yuusaku: {She only needs two more points to beat me!} The two combatants rose to face each other again. Kurumi kicked at Yuusaku's face. As he raised his arms to block Kurumi's kick, Kurumi suddenly dropped her kicking foot to the canvas and rushed up to Yuusaku with lightning speed, embracing him in a clinch hold. With Yuusaku's arms hopelessly trapped by Kurumi's hold, all that was left was for Kurumi to footsweep him to the canvas. Yuusaku struggled valiantly, trying to get up from under Kurumi, but he soon found himself lying face down as Kurumi easily slipped an arm around his neck for a triangle choke. Referee: Kasuga, 3 points! Kasuga is the winner! Kurumi grinned in triumph, her arm still tightly wrapped around Yuusaku's neck. She was about to whisper, "Told you so" to him when she was interrupted by the referee. "Kasuga? ... Kasuga! Release Hino now!" Yuusaku hacked and coughed violently on the canvas as Kurumi finally released his neck and jumped up, raising her arms towards the ceiling as she shouted in victory. Soon, she was surrounded by a crowd of students congratulating her and/or inquiring about the judo club. She brandished a clipboard. Kurumi: Okay, everyone! Anyone who wants to join the judo club, please put your name and phone number on this list. Learn a practical form of self-defense that will improve your physical fitness and confidence, one that works on proven scientific principles to defeat the street brawler and even karatekas! "Kuso..." wheezed Yuusaku as he continued to recover from the prolonged triangle choke. A girl: Physical fitness? Will judo improve my figure? Kurumi: Why certainly! Look what it did for mine! With a flair, she let down her hair, letting it flow down to her shoulders as she stripped off her gi, revealing a leotard. She preened before the oohs and ahhs of envious girls and the admiring whistles of the guys. A guy: I didn't know a cutie like you was in the judo club! Sign me up! Manami slapped herself on the forehead. Manami: I should have known she planned this all along. Hikaru: Hmph! She certainly looks unhurt. She didn't have to humiliate Yuusaku like that! Kazuya: So you still care about Yuusaku-niichan after all! Hikaru paused and glanced at Kazuya sadly before approaching the ring with Manami. The two girls climbed into the ring and approached Yuusaku, who was still sitting in the ring with a dazed look on his face. Yuusaku: Sonna... masaka...* I was beaten by a girl... but I'm a 2-dan.... *No way... can't be... Manami: Yuusaku? Hikaru shook him gently. Hikaru: Oi! Yuusaku! It's me, Hikaru, and Manami. Yuusaku blinked and looked at the two girls. Yuusaku: Hikaru-chan? Manami-chan? Manami: Are you alright? Yuusaku: I... I'm fine. Hikaru: I still don't approve of this bout ever taking place but I'm glad both of you... [glances at Kurumi, still surrounded by her new admirers] ...are still okay. Yuusaku: Are you still mad at me? Hikaru: No. But we still have to talk. There's... something I want to tell you.... * * * "Hey, watch it!" "Little brats!" "Excuse us!" Maiko hollered as she and Kazuya raced through the park on their skateboards past numerous near-collisions with any pedestrians unfortunate enough to share the pathway with them. Kazuya: Please get out of our way!!! Coming through!!! Something at the corner of his eye caught his attention. There was someone lying at the foot of a tree. Kazuya: Yuusaku-ni.... Oof! Kazuya had collided with... Manami! Both sprawled off the pathway onto the grass. The grocery bag Manami had been carrying lay on the ground, its contents spilling out. Maiko expertly jumped off her skateboard and flipped it up into the air where she could catch it. Manami: Kazuya! You should watch where you're going! What if I had been your height? Kazuya: Gomen, Oneechan! I sure wouldn't want to be you! Manami: What?!? Kazuya: E... I mean... I wouldn't want to be a girl, that's all. Manami: What's wrong with being a girl? Maiko: Yeah, Kazu-kun, what- Kazuya felt himself sliding deeper and deeper into trouble. The last time Maiko had frowned like that was when he had playfully lifted her skirt and now-departed Kyou-chan's skirt as well. He was lucky to have survived the beating he received afterwards. He abruptly changed the subject. Kazuya: I saw Yuusaku-niichan! Manami: Where? Kazuya pointed to the tree at whose foot Yuusaku laid. The three of them approached him. Kazuya: Did he kill himself? Manami: Kazuya! How morbid! Maiko: What a smell... look at all those beer cans around him! Manami: We definitely can't just leave him here. It's getting dark! Kazuya and Maiko did their best to help Manami prop up a very drunk Yuusaku. Something on the tree caught Maiko's eye. Maiko! Look! A message carved into the tree! Kazuya? E...? What sloppy handwriting... I can barely read it! They read the following: Let's meet here in six years To Madoka Kazuya: Heh heh, that's my Oniichan. Terrible handwriting, but what a loverboy he was! Too bad he was too much of a wimp to sign his own name! "Kazuya! Give me a hand!" The two kids turned and saw Manami struggling, with Yuusaku partly draped over her shoulder. By now, Manami had put some distance between them. Carrying their skateboards, they ran to assist Manami with carrying Yuusaku. Presently, the foursome reached a phone booth. Manami: I've never been to Yuusaku's house. I hope Hikaru-chan is home. Maiko: He lost today's bout, but... would he get this drunk just from that? Kazuya: I'm wondering myself.... He extended his mental focus into Yuusaku's mind and found himself in... A karate dojo.... Sensei: You lost to a judoka?!? How dare you come in here after bringing shame to our dojo with your humiliating loss! Yuusaku: But I didn't know anything about wrestling on the ground! Sensei: You should not have allowed your opponent to wrestle you. Yuusaku: My karate could not stop her! Sensei: You were not applying the kata properly! Get out! Kazuya: {No, this alone would not have driven Oniichan to drink... I have to dig deeper....} Kazuya found himself gazing at 17-year-old Hikaru's face, from Yuusaku's point of view. Hikaru: I've been thinking, Yuusaku... I think we should just be friends. You've been a good friend to me all these years, even when I wasn't as good a friend to you - and I'm so sorry about that. Yuusaku: Being able to finally date you was better than any apology. Hikaru: It's just that... I... Yuusaku: Is it another guy? Shinichi? Hikaru: No, not that jerk.... Yuusaku: Then why.... Hikaru: Remember I set Kyousuke-sempai free so that he could be with Madoka-san? After I did that... I felt lonely.... Yuusaku: Hikaru-chan.... Hikaru: I wanted to be with someone who would really treasure me... someone to help me forget that I was rejected.... Yuusaku: Hikaru.... Hikaru: I love you too, Yuusaku, but I'm not in love with you. Do you understand? Gomen nasai... gomen... gomen.... She started to cry and hugged Yuusaku, whose own eyes began to water. Kazuya, stunned by the emotional intensity of Yuusaku's memory, gasped as he struggled to regain his orientation. Maiko: Kazu-kun? What's wrong? Kazuya: [Laughing nervously] Nothing! Nothing! Manami: [On the phone] ...we don't know where Yuusaku lives so I was wondering if you could come and.... You can't? But why... You'll give me his phone number instead? Okay... hang on.... Manami reached into her purse and pulled out a pencil and a piece of paper. She began scribbling. Manami: Okay, go ahead... got it! Arigato, Hikaru-chan! Mata nee!* *Until next time! * * * Back at the Abcb, in the year 1996.... Kazuya: ...so Manami-neechan called up Sensei's parents and they picked him up. They weren't too happy at first with him being drunk, but after we explained what happened they understood. Kyouko: How sad... So what happened to your sensei afterwards? Kazuya: Well, he didn't want to go back to the karate dojo so he found a jujutsu dojo instead. The headmaster there recognized Sensei's potential and accepted him as an uchi-deshi.* By doing nothing but train in jujutsu day and night, Sensei advanced quickly. That's also why nobody saw him around for a long time. *Live-in student Kyouko: What about the girl who defeated him? Kazuya: Kurumi-neechan now works as a college judo coach. Maiko: Come to think of it, didn't Oneechan violate some Kodokan* rule by challenging Sensei? *Judo's chief governing body Kazuya: She would have been suspended but she brought so many people into the judo club that her sensei was happy. He overlooked it! Kyouko: Why aren't you guys in the judo club? Kazuya: No time! Between work and school and Shimada... uhh... I mean I think she wants me to take a more active role in Student Government... I only have time to train with Hino-sensei. Maiko: Yeah, he'a a good teacher. Besides, Kyou-chan, you know I'm not into school clubs... Kyouko: Hey... do you still ride a skateboard, Mai-chan? Maiko: Mine was destroyed by accident in one of Kazu-kun's most elaborate pranks... I'll have to tell you sometime.... Kazuya: I have mine right here under the counter. He went behind the counter and retrieved his skateboard. Kyouko: I saw a lot of those in California but I never got to ride one. Maiko: Want to try? Come on, it's fun! Kyouko: Uhh... I don't know.... Kazuya: Don't worry, Mai-chan and I will support you. So saying, the three friends stepped outside. Kazuya dropped his skateboard to the ground, knelt before Kyouko, and motioned deferentially to her. Kazuya: Your carriage, my lady. Kyouko nervously stepped on the skateboard as Kazuya took hold of her right hand and Maiko took her left. Rolling Kyouko along on Kazuya's skateboard, the three laughed and chatted as the setting sun basked them in rays of orange. Judo emphasizes the use of throws, chokes, and joint locks to defeat an opponent. The judo student also learns striking methods, but these, as well as the more vicious chokes and locks, are meant to be used only in self-defense and are barred from judo competitions. Because of Dr. Kano's desire to promote Judo as a sport as well as a martial art, many schools today emphasize the sportive aspect, although there are small movements both in Japan and abroad to emphasize more the martial aspect. Jujutsu - Japanese are that emphasizes the use of throws, chokes, and joint locks to defeat an opponent but also teaches various striking methods. The actual emphasis on particular fighting methods varies from school to school; some emphasize throwing and others emphasize submissions, for example. With the success of Brazilian Jujutsu in no-rules fighting tournaments, there has been a recent resurgence of interest in Jujutsu in general. Generally, Jujutsu is not practiced in sport form like Judo, although there are small "sport" Jujutsu organizations that promote tournaments. Karate - An art originating from Okinawa. The practitioner relies primarily on strikes from various parts of his or her body to defeat an opponent. As in the case of Judo, there are various schools of Karate.
